- This city is known as the birthplace of the Italian Renaissance.
They also call it the Athens of the Middle Ages - Julius Caesar established this magnificent city as a settlement for his veteran soldiers in 59 BC.
It’s come a long way - Niccolò Machiavelli played politics here in the early 1500s, and his name is associated with political sneakiness to this day.
